Who was Iris Ishikuro ?

Who was Iris Ishikuro? She was not only one of Takata’s twenty-two Master students but a very important person in the history of Reiki and it’s spread in the United States.

Iris was a relative of Mrs. Hawyo Takata, the woman responsible for bringing Reiki to the west through Hawaii. When Mrs. Takata died in 1980, Iris decided not to abide by the oath she took when Mrs. Takata mastered her: the oath of charging ten thousand dollars to Master someone. Iris Ishikuro mastered only two people, her daughter Ruby and Arthur Robinson who lived in the states.

In my previous blog post, I wrote about the History of Reiki covering only it’s beginning roots with Dr.Usui. In this post, I want to continue the History of Reiki and how it came to the west.

Before his death in 1926, Dr. Usui taught more than 2000 students and initiated twenty Reiki Masters. One of the twenty was Dr. Chujiro Hayashi. Dr. Hayashi was Naval Officer as well as a medical doctor. He is important in the history of Reiki because he trained Mrs. Hawayao Takata who brought Reiki to the west. Mrs. Takata lived in Hawaii and came to Japan in the late 1930’s seeking treatment for a medical condition. She met Dr. Hayashi and spent six months in his Reiki clinic getting healed and learning the first levels of Reiki.
