The History of Reiki Continues with Mrs. Takata
The history of Reiki continues with Mrs. Takata returning to her plantation in Hawaii and starting her Reiki practice in 1938 . Dr. Hayashi traveled to Hawaii and completed Mrs. Takat’s training shortly before the war. She trained students for over forty years but it wasn’t until 1970 that she began Mastering them. At the time of her death in 1980, she had Mastered twenty-two students. It is my opinion that it took a long time for her to Master students because of the high cost she put on this training. The cost was ten thousand dollars! Can you imagine what ten thousand dollars seemed like back then? It’s enormous by today’s standards. It must have taken her students a long time to save up this amount of money. Mrs. Takata took some other liberties which included the facts about the history of Reiki. She reported Dr. Usui to be a Christian Monk and not the Buddhist monk that he was. If you think about this time in the history of Reiki, we were at war with Japan. She likely homogenized the story of Dr. Usui to fit the American palette. She also made her students take an oath that they would teach Reiki just as she did with no written documents permitted and nothing tape recorded. Additionally, students needed to charge her fee of ten thousand dollars for Master training. For more information about Mrs. Takata: https://dragonflyhealing.wordpress.com/reiki/mrs-takatas-story/
Two Very Important People help Reiki Spread
The history of Reiki has Iris Ishikuro to thank; especially those of us who live in the West. Iris was a relative of Mrs. Takata’s. When Mrs. Takata died in 1980, Iris decided not to abide by the oath of charging ten thousand dollars. She Mastered only two people, her daughter Ruby and Arthur Robinson who lived in the states. Ruby was involved with another healing modality and never taught Reiki but Arthur did. There were many people including one of our current day, well-known figures who could not afford ten thousand dollars. They became Masters only after Arthur helped Reiki spread.

If you have taken Reiki training in the United States, you should have been given a paper showing your Reiki Lineage. If you look up your lineage, you are certain to see Arthur Robinson and Iris Ishikuro. I have shared my lineage below. Dr. Usui wanted Reiki to be readily shared by all. His wish continues today thanks to Iris and Arthur, two very important Reiki Masters in the history of Reiki.
